The Growth Response of Several Varieties of Shrub Pepper (Piper Nigrum L.) Against the Composition of the Planting Media

Introduction

Pepper pepper (Piper Nigrum L.) is one of the plantation commodities that has a strategic opportunity in the farm system. The growth of shrub pepper is influenced by various factors, including the composition of the planting media. This study aims to investigate the growth response of several varieties of shrub pepper to different compositions of planting media. The research was conducted in the village of Cengkeh Turi, Binjai, which is at an altitude of about 32 meters above sea level, starting from October to December 2018.

Research Methods

In this study, a random design group was used with two treatment factors and three replications. The first factor consists of three varieties of shrub pepper, namely Petaling-1, Natar-1, and Local Binjai. Meanwhile, the second factor is various planting media compositions consisting of:

Top Soil: This is the control treatment, which is the most commonly used planting media in pepper cultivation.
Top soil plus blotong (filter mud): Blotong is a type of organic matter that is rich in nutrients and can improve soil fertility.
Top soil mixed with empty palm oil bunches (TKKS), fiber, and solid decanter: This treatment is a combination of organic and inorganic materials that can provide nutrients and improve soil structure.
Top soil mixed with cow manure: Cow manure is a rich source of nutrients and can improve soil fertility.

Research Results

The results showed that local varieties of Binjai have a better growth average than other varieties, with the highest value in terms of seed height and number of leaves. Natar-1 varieties show excellence in the total leaf area. In addition, the composition of planting media that uses top soil and blotong is proven to be able to increase various growth parameters, such as the high increase in seeds, the number of leaves, fresh weight of the canopy, the fresh weight of the root, the dry weight of the canopy, and the root dry weight.

However, although the variety of shrub pepper and the composition of the planting media gives different results, the interaction between the two does not show a significant effect on all observed parameters. This shows that both the selected varieties and the composition of the planting media can function effectively in supporting the growth of shrub pepper, although the most optimal combination has not been found in this study.

Additional Analysis and Explanation

The importance of planting media in plant growth cannot be underestimated. Quality media will provide the nutrients needed by plants, as well as provide ideal aeration and humidity conditions.
