Introduction

The implementation of the Non -Smoking Area (KTR) is a crucial effort to protect the public from the health risks caused by cigarette smoke. The environment polluted due to cigarette smoke can cause various health problems, both for active and passive smokers. This is where the important role of religious leaders, especially in places of worship such as churches, becomes very relevant. The Catholic Church of St. Fransiskus Assisi Pasar VI Padang Bulan Medan, like many other churches, has a significant influence on its congregation and the surrounding community. This study aims to examine the role of religious leaders (priests) and church administrators in the application of KTR in the Catholic Church of St. Francis Assisi, Pasar VI Padang Bulan, Medan.

Methodology

This study uses a qualitative approach with the phenomenological method through in-depth interviews. The informants in this study consisted of priests and church administrators, and the results will be compared with data obtained from the PB Selayang II Puskesmas and Medan City Health Office. The qualitative approach was chosen to gain a deeper understanding of the role of religious leaders in the implementation of KTR, as it allows for a more in-depth exploration of the experiences and perspectives of the informants.

The results of this study showed that the pastor and church administrators had realized the importance of KTR, but the practice of smoking ban was only applied in the church building. This indicates that the role of the priest in encouraging the application of KTR in the Church environment has not been optimized. In addition, church administrators also have not carried out the implementation of KTR consistently in the church area. This condition reflects that although the understanding of KTR already exists, concrete actions in its application are still lacking.

The availability of regulations and implementation of KTR in the Church is very dependent on the attitude of religious leaders and church administrators. Therefore, it is essential for the Medan Archdiocese to give an appeal to religious leaders to want to play an active role in changing smoking behavior and establishing KTR regulations in their respective church areas. The role of religious leaders in promoting a healthy environment in the Church is crucial, as they have the influence and authority to shape the behavior of their congregation.

Suggestions for Improvement

Suggestions to note are for religious leaders in the Catholic Church of St. Francis Assisi Pasar VI Padang Bulan Medan to be more proactive in implementing KTR. This includes socializing the importance of KTR to the congregation and encouraging them to change smoking behavior, especially when in the church environment. Collective awareness and concrete actions from religious leaders and church administrators will greatly determine the success of the implementation of KTR, so that the Church environment can be created healthier and cleaner from cigarette smoke.
