The Influence of Simulation Method Accompanied by Lectures and Demonstrations on the Behavior of Young Women about Efforts to Detect Early Breast Cancer
Introduction
Breast cancer is a frightening disease that affects millions of women worldwide. Early detection through awareness is a crucial key in increasing the chances of healing. In Indonesia, breast cancer is a significant health concern, particularly among young women. This study aims to examine the effect of the simulation method on the behavior of young women in early detection of breast cancer by realizing in SMA Negeri 1 Kuta Baro, Aceh Besar Regency in 2015.
Background
Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Indonesia. Early detection is critical in increasing the chances of healing, and awareness is a crucial aspect of this process. However, many young women in Indonesia lack adequate knowledge and skills to detect breast cancer early. This study aims to address this issue by examining the effect of the simulation method on the behavior of young women in early detection of breast cancer.
Methodology
This study uses a pseudo-experimental design with the "One Group Pre-Posttest Design" approach that involves aware simulation. All 59 female students of SMA Negeri 1 Kuta Baro, consisting of 25 students in class X, 21 students in class XI, and 13 students in class XII, became research subjects. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon statistical test.
Results
The results showed a significant increase in the average value of students' knowledge, attitudes, and actions before and after being given a simulation of awareness. The average value of knowledge increased from 7,719 to 12,766, the average attitude value increased from 41,678 to 53.864, and the average action value increased from 2,627 to 14.644. The Wilcoxon test shows the significant influence of simulation methods on behavior (knowledge, attitudes, and actions) of young women in an early detection of breast cancer.
Discussion
This finding shows that the simulation method is effective in increasing knowledge, attitudes, and actions of young women regarding early detection of breast cancer with awareness. This is in line with learning theories that emphasize the importance of direct and interactive experience in the learning process. Simulation provides opportunities for participants to practice and understand firsthand how to do awareness, thereby increasing their understanding and confidence in conducting their own examinations.
Conclusion
Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that the Health Office, especially in the field of Health Problem Control (PMK), in collaboration with the Puskesmas to improve the behavior of awareness in young women in every high school in Aceh Besar Regency through counseling with the use of the simulation method of awareness. SMA Negeri 1 Kuta Baro also needs to collaborate with the Puskesmas to conduct intensive conscious counseling as an early detection of breast cancer.
Recommendations
The importance of education and training for young women cannot be underestimated. By understanding the importance of early detection and having adequate knowledge and skills, they can play an active role in maintaining personal health and detecting breast cancer early, thereby increasing the chances of healing and preventing more serious adverse effects.

This study has several implications for education and health professionals. Firstly, it highlights the importance of using simulation methods in education to increase knowledge, attitudes, and actions of young women regarding early detection of breast cancer. Secondly, it emphasizes the need for collaboration between health professionals and educators to improve the behavior of awareness in young women. Finally, it underscores the importance of education and training for young women in maintaining personal health and detecting breast cancer early.
Limitations
This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size is relatively small, and the study was conducted in a single school. Secondly, the study only examined the effect of simulation methods on behavior and did not investigate other factors that may influence behavior. Finally, the study was conducted in a specific context and may not be generalizable to other settings.
