A Multimodal Analysis of the Children’s Picture Books Wonderful World of English

Introduction

In today's fast-paced world of learning, children's picture books have become an essential tool for introducing the concept of English to children. These books not only provide a fun and engaging way for kids to learn, but also offer a unique opportunity for parents and educators to explore the world of language and literacy. The "Wonderful World of English" picture book is one such example, which has been widely used in educational settings to teach children about the English language. However, despite its popularity, there is a lack of research on the multimodal analysis of this book. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the textual metapholians and the meaning of the composition contained in the book.

Multimodal analysis is a critical approach in understanding how children interact with picture books. By analyzing both the verbal and visual elements of the book, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of how these elements work together to convey meaning and create a learning experience for children. In this study, we adopted the language metaphysia approach submitted by Halliday, which focuses on the analysis of verbal text, and the visual narrative theory proposed by Unsworth, which is based on the development of the theory of Kress and Van Leeuwen. This approach allows us to examine the textual metaphunction and the meaning of the composition contained in the book.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive qualitative method, which focuses on in-depth analysis of existing elements. The data used in this study includes words and images taken from the "Wonderful World of English" picture book. We analyzed the verbal text using the language metaphysia approach, and the visual text using the visual narrative theory. The results of this analysis were then compared to identify any patterns or relationships between the textual metaphunction and the meaning of the composition.

Research Findings

The results of this study show that the most dominant textual metaphunction elements are topical theme, which consists of 180 themes of a total of 185 clauses, and 192 Rema. On the other hand, the elements of the dominant meaning of composition include complementary layout in integrated intermodal, images are not bound in fushing, and centrifocal focus group in focus. These findings suggest that the "Wonderful World of English" picture book uses a combination of verbal and visual elements to convey meaning and create a learning experience for children.
