In the world of work, tailors are one of the professions that rely heavily on hand skills and accuracy in producing fabric products. However, behind the beauty and accuracy of stitches, there are health risks that are often ignored, namely eye health problems. This study aims to explore factors related to the symptoms of eye fatigue that are often experienced by tailors in the Berdikari Market, Badak Bejuang Village, Tebing Tinggi City in 2023.

The Importance of Eye Health in the Workplace

Eye fatigue is a common problem that can be caused by various factors, especially for those who work in fields that require intensive attention to details, such as tailors. Prolonged exposure to visual stimuli, inadequate lighting, and poor working conditions can all contribute to eye fatigue. In this study, the authors used an analytical survey approach using the cross-sectional method to investigate the factors related to eye fatigue in tailors.

Methodology

Research Design and Sampling

A total of 33 tailors became samples in this study, which were taken using the total sampling technique. The authors used a survey questionnaire to collect data on the symptoms of eye fatigue experienced by the tailors, as well as their working conditions and habits.

Data analysis using the Pearson correlation test shows a significant relationship between several factors and the symptoms of eye fatigue. The results of the study are presented below.

Difficulties in focusing your eyes and drowsiness are also detected, even in smaller proportions.

Factors Related to Eye Fatigue

The results of the study show that there is a significant relationship between the age of the tailor and the eye fatigue (p = 0.010 and r = 0.440). This shows that the older the tailor age, the more likely they are experiencing eye fatigue. The distance to see the object also contributes to the problem, so the tailor is advised to pay attention to the position and distance at work.

In addition, adequate lighting intensity is also an important factor in minimizing the symptoms of eye fatigue (p = 0.013 and r = -0.428). However, interestingly, this study did not find a significant relationship between the length of time of work and eye fatigue in the tailor. This indicates that although length of work is a factor that might affect, it does not always contribute to eye health problems, it may be caused by other factors such as good work habits and eye care.
