Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of immersion in the denture cleaning solution on the surface roughness and color stability of the thermoplastic nylon denture base material added with glass fibers with a concentration of 1% and 1.5%. This study was conducted through an experimental approach in the laboratory involving 30 samples of thermoplastic nylon artificial denture bases made in the USU FKG dental laboratory test unit.
Methodology
The samples were divided into six groups, including groups without glass fiber, with 1% glass fiber, and 1.5%, both soaked or not soaked in denture cleaning solutions. Measurement of surface roughness was done using a profileometer, while color stability was measured by a colorimeter. The data obtained were analyzed with one-way ANOVA to determine the effect of adding glass fibers and t-tests for the immersion effect in the cleaning solution. Furthermore, differences in effects between groups were analyzed using the LSD test.
Results
The results showed that there was no significant effect of immersion in the denture cleaning solution on surface roughness and color stability on the thermoplastic nylon denture base material added with 1% and 1.5% glass fiber. Both types of denture base ingredients, both those containing glass fibers and those that are not, soaked in commercial cleaning solutions for 30 hours (simulation of use for one year) do not show significant changes in surface roughness and color stability.
Conclusion
From the results of this study, it can be concluded that immersion in the cleaning solution does not have a significant negative impact on the quality of the surface and thermoplastic nylon color added with glass fiber. This is an important finding for clinical practice, because it shows that artificial dentures made of thermoplastic nylon can still be maintained even if soaked in cleaning solutions for a long time. With this understanding, dental professionals can provide better recommendations to patients regarding their denture care.
