Introduction
The world is shifting towards renewable energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change. Bioethanol, a type of biofuel produced from organic matter, is one such alternative energy source. In this study, we investigated the effect of fermentation time and concentration of bread yeast on bioethanol levels produced from glucose fermentation obtained from hydrolysis of oil palm empty bunches. The results of this study have significant implications for the development of sustainable renewable energy sources.
Background
Oil palm empty bunches (OPEB) are a type of agricultural waste generated during the production of palm oil. These waste materials are rich in cellulose, a complex carbohydrate that can be converted into glucose through hydrolysis. Glucose can then be fermented into ethanol using yeast. The fermentation process involves the conversion of glucose into ethanol through a series of biochemical reactions. The concentration of yeast and fermentation time are critical factors that affect the efficiency of this process.
Materials and Methods
In this study, we used cellulose obtained from OPEB as the raw material for glucose production. The cellulose was hydrolyzed using a 3% H2SO4 solution to produce glucose, which was then analyzed using the Luff Schoorl method. The glucose fermentation process was carried out using different concentrations of bread yeast (2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0%, and 3.5%) and fermentation times (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days). The fermentation temperature was maintained at 27°C, which is an optimal temperature for many types of bread yeast.
Results
The results of this study showed that the highest ethanol levels were obtained with a fermentation time of 1 day and a yeast concentration of 2.0%. The ethanol levels obtained were 1.1% of 7% glucose fermentation. This finding is significant because it shows that shorter fermentation times can be more profitable than longer fermentation times.
Discussion
The effect of fermentation time and concentration of bread yeast on bioethanol levels is a critical aspect of this study. Yeast functions as a glucose converting agent to ethanol through the fermentation process. Yeast concentrations that are too low can result in inefficient fermentation, while too high concentrations can cause toxicity for yeast cells and inhibit the fermentation process. At higher temperatures, yeast can function faster, but can also increase the possibility of the formation of unwanted side products.
Conclusion
From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the duration of fermentation and concentration of bread yeast has a significant effect on bioethanol levels produced from glucose fermentation resulting from hydrolysis of oil palm empty bunches. This discovery provides valuable insight for further research and development in the field of bioenergy, as well as opening opportunities to optimize the use of agricultural waste as a sustainable renewable energy source.
