Introduction

To test the effects of ulcer prevention, healthy male rats weighing between 150-200 grams were used as research subjects. The rats were fasted for 36 hours and divided into four groups. The first group was given only distilled water as a negative control, the second group was also given distilled water, the third group received fresh alginate syrup, and the fourth group received alginate syrup that had been stored for 12 weeks at room temperature. After 30 minutes, rats from the second, third group, and fourth group were given 1 ml of 0.6 N HCl orally. After an hour, the rats were killed using excessive ether inhalation, and their stomachs were taken for analysis.

Results and Discussion

The results showed that there was a decrease in the viscosity, pH, and specific gravity of alginate syrup stored at room temperature and in the refrigerator. However, the decrease that occurred in syrup stored at room temperature was much greater than those stored in the refrigerator. Before storage, the molecular weight of the sodium alginate was recorded at 580,900, whereas after 12 weeks, the molecular weight of the alginate syrup at room temperature decreased to 328,700 and to 420,650 for syrup stored in the refrigerator. In terms of organoleptic examination, alginate syrup that was stored at room temperature showed changes in odor and sour taste after 15 weeks, while syrup stored in the refrigerator remained unchanged.

Giving 0.6 N HCl orally to rats induces the formation of ulcers in the gastric mucosa. However, alginate syrup both newly created and stored for 12 weeks proved effective in preventing the formation of ulcers induced by HCl. This finding shows that alginate syrup is more stable when stored in the refrigerator and has a significant ulcer preventive effect.

Conclusion

This study concluded that alginate syrup stored in the refrigerator has better stability than that stored at room temperature. In addition, both fresh alginate syrup and stored for 12 weeks at room temperature can provide a preventive effect on gastric ulcers induced by hydrochloric acid. This study highlights the importance of managing alginate syrup storage to maximize its therapeutic potential in overcoming the problem of gastric hyperactivity.
