Knowledge Level of Clinical Student Students of the USU FKG Oral Surgery Department on Maxillofacial Trauma Handling (November - December 2015)

Introduction

Maxillofacial trauma refers to injuries suffered by the face and surrounding tissue due to various factors such as traffic accidents, physical violence, falling, sports activities, or the use of firearms. Appropriate handling of trauma is very important to prevent further complications. In this context, research aims to evaluate the level of knowledge of clinical regional students in the Department of Oral Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, University of North Sumatra (FKG USU) regarding the handling of maxilofacial trauma during the period November to December 2015.

Methodology

This research is descriptive, which means its main focus is to describe the real situation based on the data collected. In this study, the sampling technique used was total sampling, where all subjects that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were involved. As many as 60 students participated in this study, and data was collected through a questionnaire containing 20 questions filled out directly by the respondent.

Results

The results of the study showed that the level of knowledge of the Clinical Clinical Student of the USU FKG Oral Surgery Department regarding the handling of maxilofacial trauma was in the "sufficient" category with a percentage of 56.7%. This finding shows that although students have adequate knowledge, there is still room for improvement.

Discussion

Sufficient knowledge in handling maxilofacial trauma is an important basis for dental students, especially in the field of oral surgery. Appropriate treatment can reduce the risk of infection, optimize the healing process, and improve the quality of life of post-trauma patients. Therefore, it is important to strengthen the student education and training curriculum in this field.

One step that can be taken is to add a special module about handling maxilofacial trauma in the education program. In addition, conducting practical training and simulation handling trauma can help students better understand and prepare themselves in real situations. Direct interaction with experienced instructors can also increase students' understanding and confidence in handling trauma cases.

Conclusion

Furthermore, the results of this study can be an evaluation material for educational programs at the USU FKG, to ensure that students not only have theoretical knowledge, but also the practical skills needed to handle maxilofacial trauma effectively. It is hoped that with improvement in education, students will be better prepared in facing challenges in the field, and can provide better care to patients in the future.

Implication

Thus, the handling of maxilofacial trauma is not only the responsibility of experienced medical personnel, but also an integral part of education and training for dental students. This is very important in an effort to improve the quality of health services and patient safety.

Recommendation

Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that the USU FKG Oral Surgery Department strengthen the education and training curriculum in handling maxilofacial trauma. This can be achieved by adding a special module about handling maxilofacial trauma in the education program, conducting practical training and simulation handling trauma, and providing direct interaction with experienced instructors.

Limitation

This study has some limitations. The study only focused on the level of knowledge of clinical regional students in the Department of Oral Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, University of North Sumatra (FKG USU) regarding the handling of maxilofacial trauma. Future studies can be conducted to evaluate the level of knowledge of dental students in other universities and to identify the factors that influence the level of knowledge of dental students in handling maxilofacial trauma.
