Introduction

This study aims to determine the critical period of competition between green bean plants and weeds, and to provide valuable insights for farmers and researchers to better understand the interaction between green bean plants and weeds.

Background

Methodology

This study was conducted at UPT Seed Main, Tanjung Selamat, Medan Tuntung District, North Sumatra, from February to June 2022. The research method used was a Factorial Random Block Design (RBD) with 8 Time periods of replanting. The parameters measured include plant height in 2 and 4 weeks after planting (wap), the number of productive branches, the number of pods per plant, the weight of the pods per plant, the weight of the pods per plot, the weight of the seeds per plant, the weight of 100 seeds, and the weight of the seeds per plot.

Results

The results showed that different replanting times had a significant effect on the growth and yield of green bean plants. The critical period for green bean plants lasts between 21 to 32 days after planting. During this period, green bean plants are very vulnerable to competition with weeds. If weeds are not managed properly in this period, it can cause a significant decrease in yield.

The dominance of weeds found in the study area is Rotundus Cyperus Weeds, Synedrella Nodiflora, and Cynodon Dactylon. These weeds have high adaptability, so that it requires a more efficient control strategy. Weed control can be done in various ways, including the use of herbicides, manual weeding, and the application of mulch techniques. The combination of weed management and good agricultural practices will help increase the yield of green beans.

This study provides valuable insights for farmers and researchers to better understand the interaction between green bean plants and weeds, as well as the importance of proper weed management to increase agricultural outcomes on an ongoing basis.
