Introduction

This study aims to analyze the type and density of mangrove vegetation and its effect on the rate of sedimentation and abrasion at Sei Tuan Beach, Pantai Labu District, Deli Serdang Regency.

Background

Mangrove ecosystems are complex and dynamic systems that provide numerous ecological, economic, and social benefits. They act as a natural defense against storms, tsunamis, and erosion, protecting coastal communities and infrastructure. Mangroves also provide a habitat for various marine life, including fish, crustaceans, and birds. Methodology

This study uses the purposive sampling method by establishing 2 research stations to represent each location. Mangrove identification is done directly in the field, while the density calculation is carried out by the transect method. The sedimentation rate is measured using a sedimentation trap with a diameter of 4 inches and a height of 30 cm. The study aims to determine the type and density of mangrove vegetation and analyze the effect of mangrove density on the rate of sedimentation and abrasion at Sei Tuan Beach.

Results

The results of the identification of the species showed that there were 5 types of mangroves on Sei Tuan Beach, namely Avicennia Marina, Achantus Ilicifolius, Bruguiera sexangula, Rhizophora apiculata, and Rhizophora mucronata. Mangrove density at each research station shows a significant variation:

*** Station 1: ** Tree density 400 ind/ha, puppily density 100 ind/ha, and not found seedlings. *** Station 2: ** Tree density 3600 ind/ha, puppily density 300 ind/ha, and seed density 300 ind/ha. *** Station 3: ** Tree density 1400 ind/ha, puppily density 1400 ind/ha, and seed density 1100 ind/ha.

Discussion

The results of the analysis indicate an inverse relationship between mangrove density and sedimentation rate. The higher the mangrove density, the lower the sedimentation rate and vice versa. This shows that mangroves play an important role in stabilizing the coastline by slowing down the rate of water currents, thus allowing sediment particles to settle and accumulate around the roots of the mangrove. The high mangrove density at station 2 shows the success of rehabilitation in the area. However, low mangrove density at station 1 indicates the need for more intensive rehabilitation efforts.

Conclusion

This study shows that the density of mangrove vegetation is very influential on the rate of sedimentation and abrasion at Sei Tuan Beach. Effective mangrove rehabilitation can increase mangrove density, slow down the sedimentation rate, and protect the coastline from abrasion. Efforts to preserve and rehabilitate mangroves on Sei Tuan Beach need to continue to be carried out to ensure the preservation of mangrove ecosystems and the sustainability of its ecological functions as a barrier to abrasion and coastline protectors.
