Introduction

The Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSE) is one of the largest stock exchanges in Southeast Asia, with a significant number of banking companies listed on it. The performance of these companies has a direct impact on the stock prices, and therefore, it is essential to analyze the factors that affect their share prices. This study aims to investigate the effect of profitability on changes in the share price of banking companies listed on the JSE. The main focus of this research is to explore how financial ratios, including Return on Asset (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Net Profit Margin (NPM), and Interest Margin on Loans (IML), affect the movement of stock prices during the period 2001 to 2005.

Background of the Study

The banking industry is a crucial sector in any economy, and the performance of banking companies has a significant impact on the overall economy. The profitability of banking companies is a key indicator of their financial health and performance. A high level of profitability indicates that a company is able to generate sufficient profits from its operations, which can lead to an increase in its share price. On the other hand, a low level of profitability can lead to a decrease in the share price.

Methodology

This study uses a descriptive analysis and statistical analysis, especially multiple linear regression, to analyze the data. The hypothesis test was carried out by statistical test, namely partial test (t-test) and simultaneous test (F test), with a significance level of α = 5%. Data were analyzed using SPSS statistical software version 12.0.

Results

The results of the simultaneous test (F test) show that the independent variables - ROA, ROE, NPM, and IML - have a significant significant influence on the dependent variable, namely the stock price. This is evidenced by the SPSS results that show a smaller significance value than Alpha (0.002 <0.05). This means that profitability has a significant effect on changes in stock prices when seen as a whole.

Meanwhile, the results of the partial test (T-test) revealed that the profitability ratio consisting of ROA, ROE, and IML had a significant effect on changes in stock prices. Especially, ROE and IML show a more dominant effect, each with a significance level of 0.001, so that this hypothesis is accepted because the value is smaller than Alpha. On the other hand, the Net Profit Margin (NPM) profitability ratio does not show a significant effect on changes in stock prices.

Additional Analysis and Explanation

From the results of the research above, it can be concluded that the profitability of banking companies is very influential on the fluctuations in stock prices on the Jakarta Stock Exchange. Good profitability performance, which is reflected through ROE and IML ratios, tends to attract the attention of investors. This is because investors see high returns as an indication of the success of company management in generating profits from each of the capital units invested.

High ROE shows that companies are effective in using existing capital to generate profits. Meanwhile, the IML shows how much income earned from the loan given, so that the higher this margin, the more beneficial for the bank. Both gave a positive signal to the market, encouraging an increase in demand for the company's shares.

On the other hand, although NPM has an important role in assessing overall profitability, the results show that NPM does not have a significant effect on this context. This can be interpreted that the market pays more attention to the ratio directly related to the efficiency of capital use and asset management, rather than a more absolute net profit margin.

Conclusion

This study provides an important insight that the company's financial performance not only affects internal performance, but also has a direct impact on market perceptions and the value of the company's shares. Investors and company managers need to pay attention to this profitability ratio in making investment decisions and financial management strategies.
