Garbage Composition and Characteristics

The composition of waste produced in Sunggal District consists of 62.98% organic waste, 15.52% plastic, 9.36% paper, and the rest is divided into other categories including LWTR (Landfill Waste Tipping Rate), glass, metal, and material inert. In contrast, the composition of waste in Deli Tua District is dominated by organic waste, reaching 66.68%, followed by plastic as much as 17.33% and paper 6.75%. This comparison indicates that the two districts have similar waste characteristics, with the dominance of organic waste.

In terms of physical characteristics, waste in Sunggal District has a specific gravity of 0.07 kg/l with 33.37% water content, volatile material (volatile matter) 53.64%, ash content 4.07%, and fixed carbon 8.92%. The heat value of garbage in this district reaches 3666.92 kcal/kg. Meanwhile, garbage in Deli Tua District shows a slightly lower specific gravity, which is 0.06 kg/l, with 47.81% moisture content, 40.69% Volatile Matter, 8.83% ash content, and Fixed Carbon 2.67%, as well as heat value 3363.70 kcal/kg.

Potential for Waste Processing with BSF Larvae

One of the interesting findings of this research is the potential use of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae in waste management. BSF larvae have the ability to consume organic waste, so they can act as an efficient solution in reducing the volume of waste.
