Introduction

The use of X-rays in hospitals requires serious attention to the elements of safety. In accordance with Government Regulation No. 33 of 2007 concerning Radiation Safety Ionization and Safety Radioactive sources, radiation safety is an action taken to protect workers, the community, and the environment from the dangers of radiation. Therefore, radiation workers must always get monitoring of the radiation dose received, and behave in accordance with applicable safety procedures. This study aims to evaluate the influence of education, training, knowledge, and attitudes of workers in the Department of Radiology H. Adam Malik Hospital, especially in radiology and interventional diagnostic units during 2014.

Background

Radiation safety is a critical aspect of healthcare, particularly in radiology departments where workers are exposed to ionizing radiation on a daily basis. The risks associated with radiation exposure can be mitigated through proper training, education, and adherence to safety protocols. However, the effectiveness of these measures depends on various factors, including the level of education, training, knowledge, and attitudes of radiation workers. This study aims to investigate the relationship between these factors and radiation safety actions in the radiology installation of H. Adam Malik Hospital Medan.

Methodology

This study used an analytic design with a cross-sectional approach and was carried out in August 2014. The research population consisted of 65 employees working in the unit, with a sample of 40 people. Data analysis was carried out by the Chi-Square method and logistics regression. The study aimed to evaluate the influence of education, training, knowledge, and attitudes of workers on radiation safety actions in radiology H. Adam Malik Hospital.

Results

The results showed a significant effect of education (p = 0.035), training (p = 0.044), knowledge (p = 0.027), and attitude (p = 0.044) on radiation safety actions in radiology H. Adam Malik Hospital. Training was the most influential factor, with an Exp (B) value of 14,929, which means that employees who have received training have the possibility of safer 14.929 times compared to those who do not receive training.

The findings of this study highlight the importance of education, training, knowledge, and attitudes of radiation workers in ensuring radiation safety actions in radiology H. Adam Malik Hospital. The results suggest that training is the most influential factor in determining radiation safety actions, which is consistent with previous studies that have emphasized the critical role of training in radiation safety. The study also highlights the need for regular socialization regarding SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) radiation safety to all staff in the Radiology Department.
