Introduction

The sweet potato is a staple crop in many parts of the world, and its production and trade play a crucial role in the economy of rural areas. In the Karo Regency District, sweet potatoes are a major crop, and the Pertibi Lama Village is one of the largest centers of sweet potato production. However, the trade of sweet potatoes in this region is complex, and there are various channels through which they are traded. This study aims to analyze the export and non-export pathways of sweet potatoes from Pertibi Lama Village, Karo Regency District, and to examine the functions of the trading carried out by each institution involved.

Background

The Karo Regency District is a major producer of sweet potatoes in Indonesia, and the Pertibi Lama Village is one of the largest centers of sweet potato production in the region. Methodology

This study used various methods to analyze the data, including descriptive analysis, Shepherd methods, Acharya and Aggrawal methods, Composite Index Method, Marketing Efficiency Index Method, as well as efficiency methods according to Soekartawi. The data were collected from various sources, including farmers, traders, exporters, and consumers.

Results

The results of this study showed that there were three channels of sweet potato trading analyzed. Of the three channels, the second channel, which includes farmers, traders, traders from Medan, and consumers, is proven as the most efficient channel. Conversely, the first channel, consisting of farmers, exporters, and consumers, shows a lower level of efficiency.

Sweet Potato Tract Analysis

The trade channel has a crucial role in determining the efficiency and continuity of sweet potato farming. In the second channel, there is a reduction in the intermediary layer which directly reduces trade costs. This contributes to increasing profits for farmers. On the other hand, the first channel involving exporters has more stages, which has the potential to increase costs and widen the price range.

Efficiency in the trade channel is strongly influenced by the ability of each institution in carrying out its functions. For example, traders in the second channel can negotiate prices better and have broader access to the market, so they are able to provide competitive prices for consumers and better profits for farmers.

Cost and Margin

In the aspect of trading costs, this study found that the second channel reduced operational costs incurred compared to the first channel. Lower costs allow farmers to receive better prices for their products. The margins obtained from each channel are also diverse. In the second channel, larger margins are received by farmers, while in the first channel, margins are more enjoyed by exporters.

Conclusion and Implications

From the analysis conducted, it can be concluded that the selection of appropriate trade channels has a significant effect on the efficiency of the sweet potato. It is important for farmers and other stakeholders to understand the dynamics of this trade channel in order to make the right decision to increase their income. The existence of an efficient trade channel is not only beneficial to farmers, but can also make a positive contribution to food security in the area.

This study provides valuable insight into the structure of sweet potato trading in the brand sub-district, as well as opening opportunities for further research that can explore strategies to increase efficiency in other agricultural trade.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:
