Maternal and child health problems (KIA) remain a serious concern in Indonesia, characterized by high maternal mortality rates (MMR) and infant mortality rates (AKB). In 2005, Indonesia ranked fourth highest in the world in terms of maternal and child health problems, based on data from developing countries. The persistence of these problems is a cause for concern, and it is essential to identify the underlying factors contributing to this issue.

The Role of Baby Shamans in Childbirth Assistance

Although access to health services has increased, the existence of a shaman remains a primary choice for some people, particularly in remote areas or for those who are constrained by costs. The factor of trust in tradition and hereditary practices is a significant trigger for this preference. Baby shamans, in particular, play a crucial role in childbirth assistance, and their knowledge and attitudes have a significant impact on the quality of their services.

The Study: Analyzing the Effect of Baby Shamans' Knowledge and Attitudes on Childbirth Assistance

This study aims to analyze the effect of the knowledge and attitude of baby shamans on the acts of childbirth assistance in Baktiya District, North Aceh Regency. The research employed an analytic approach with an Explanatory Research design. The population and sample of the study consisted of 43 baby shamans in Baktiya District. Data was collected through interviews using a questionnaire and analyzed using multiple logistics regression.

The Findings: Knowledge and Attitudes of Baby Shamans

The results of the study showed that the knowledge and attitudes of the baby shamans had a significant effect on their labor assistance. This finding underlines the importance of education and training for baby shamans to improve the quality of their services. The study highlights the need for baby shamans to acquire knowledge about safe labor practices and medical procedures.

Recommendations to Improve the Quality of Childbirth Assistance by a Shaman

Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations are made to improve the quality of childbirth assistance by a shaman:

Improvement of Training and Education

Baktiya Health Center needs to actively provide training and education to infant shamans regarding the practice of safe labor and according to medical procedures. The training material must include knowledge about the signs of labor complications and referral procedures to health facilities.

Cooperation and Collaboration

Baktiya Health Center needs to build close cooperation between baby shamans and village midwives. This collaboration aims to provide support and assistance to shamans when facing obstacles in helping childbirth, as well as to increase access to professional health services for mothers and infants.

Socialization and Counseling

It is essential to increase public awareness about the importance of giving birth safely and helped by trained medical personnel. Socialization and counseling can be done through various media, such as group meetings, counseling in Posyandu, or mass media.

Conclusion: The Importance of Knowledge and Attitudes of Baby Shamans

Knowledge and attitudes of shamans have an important role in determining the quality of childbirth assistance. Efforts to increase the knowledge and attitudes of infant shamans, through training, education, and cooperation with village midwives, are strategic steps to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in the Baktiya District area.
