Analysis of Sanitation Hygiene and Refill Drinking Water Quality (AMIU) Based on Raw Water Sources in Drinking Water Depots in Medan City

Introduction

Drinking water is a fundamental human need, essential for maintaining health and well-being. In urban areas, however, access to clean and fresh drinking water is becoming increasingly challenging. Groundwater, a common source of drinking water, is often contaminated by septic tanks, industrial waste, and household waste, making it a less desirable option. As a result, people are turning to refill drinking water as a more affordable alternative. This study aims to analyze the sanitation hygiene and drinking water quality at the Amiu Depot in Medan City, a major urban center in Indonesia.

Background

The high consumption of refill drinking water in Medan City is a concern, given the potential for bacterial contamination in the water. Previous studies have shown that the water quality in refill drinking water depots can be compromised, posing a risk to public health. The purpose of this study is to investigate the sanitation hygiene and drinking water quality at the Amiu Depot in Medan City, with a focus on the raw water sources used by the depot.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive analytic research design, using a survey method and cross-sectional design. The research population consisted of all drinking water depots in Medan City that use raw water sources from mountains, totaling around 90 depots. The research sample was selected from 30 depots spread across three raw water collection locations. Physical, chemical, and biological parameters were measured to assess the water quality.

Results

The results of this study showed that the quality of water with physical parameters (color, odor, turbidity, temperature, TDS) and chemicals (pH and iron content) from raw water sources, water from tanks, water from processing machines, and water from gallons still meet the requirements for drinking water quality. However, based on microbiological parameters, contamination was found in water from raw water sources and water from tankers. Interestingly, five depots were found to be contaminated with coli bacteria in water samples from the gallon.

Statistical Analysis

Statistical tests were conducted to analyze the relationship between water quality parameters in water samples from tanks, water from processing machines, and water from gallons. The results showed no significant difference between water quality parameters in water samples from these sources. However, a significant relationship was found between sanitation hygiene and water microbiology quality.

Discussion

The findings of this study have important implications for the management of drinking water depots in Medan City. Despite the water quality of raw water sources, tankers, and processing machines meeting the standards, there is still the potential for bacterial contamination in gallon water that is ready to be consumed. This indicates that the processing and storage of drinking water in several amiu depots in Medan City has not been fully optimal. Increased sanitation hygiene and tighter water quality control at all stages of processing and distribution of refill drinking water are essential to ensure the safety and health of the public.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of sanitation hygiene and water quality control in drinking water depots in Medan City. The findings of this study recommend that the manager of the Amiu Depot in Medan implement sanitation hygiene in accordance with the guidelines for the implementation of the depot and routinely check water quality. The relevant agencies are also expected to provide strict supervision of the Amiu Depot to ensure the quality of drinking water is maintained.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Improved Sanitation Hygiene: The manager of the Amiu Depot in Medan should implement sanitation hygiene in accordance with the guidelines for the implementation of the depot.
Regular Water Quality Checks: The manager of the Amiu Depot in Medan should routinely check water quality to ensure that it meets the standards for drinking water.
Strict Supervision: The relevant agencies should provide strict supervision of the Amiu Depot to ensure that the quality of drinking water is maintained.
Increased Sanitation Hygiene and Water Quality Control: Increased sanitation hygiene and tighter water quality control at all stages of processing and distribution of refill drinking water are essential to ensure the safety and health of the public.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the study was conducted in a single city, Medan, and may not be representative of other cities in Indonesia. Secondly, the study only focused on the Amiu Depot in Medan City and may not be generalizable to other drinking water depots in the city. Finally, the study only measured physical, chemical, and biological parameters and did not consider other factors that may affect water quality.

Future research should aim to investigate the water quality in other drinking water depots in Medan City and other cities in Indonesia.
