Introduction

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive research design, which involved collecting and analyzing data from a sample of 101 individuals classified as poor in the city of Medan. The sampling method used was incidental sampling, which involves selecting participants based on their availability and willingness to participate in the study. The data collected were analyzed using a questionnaire based on the scale of patriotism developed by Blank and Schmidt (2003).

Results

The results of this study showed that the majority of participants (84.1%) had a high level of patriotism, while 14.8% had moderate levels of patriotism, and only 0.9% had low levels of patriotism. This finding indicates that patriotism among the poor in Medan is in the high category.

Aspects of Patriotism

Patriotism can be measured through two aspects: democracy patriotism and constructive criticism of the state. Democracy patriotism refers to the love and respect for democratic values and institutions, while constructive criticism of the state refers to the ability to criticize and improve the country's policies and practices. Both of these aspects are essential components of patriotism, as they demonstrate a commitment to the country's progress and development.

Factors Affecting Patriotism

This study identified three factors that affect the level of patriotism among the poor in Medan: age, education or knowledge, and gender.

The results show that even though they are in the category of poor people, their patriotism remains high.
