Introduction

The control of weeds in oil palm plantations is a significant challenge, particularly in areas with high rainfall. The application of herbicides is vulnerable to being washed away by rain, reducing their effectiveness. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of various types of herbicides with different active ingredients against general weeds in oil palm plantations, taking into account the free time of rain after application.

Background

Oil palm plantations are a significant contributor to the global economy, with Indonesia being the world's largest producer. However, the control of weeds in these plantations is a major challenge, affecting crop yields and production efficiency. Weeds can compete with oil palm plants for water, nutrients, and light, reducing their growth and productivity. The use of herbicides is a common method of weed control, but their effectiveness can be reduced by rain, which can wash them away before they have a chance to act.

Methodology

This study was conducted at the PTPN II Tanjung Jati plantation in Binjai, Langkat, from February to May 2021. The research design used a split plot design, with 5 types of herbicides as the main plots (Glyphosate, Topramezone, Ammonium Glufosinate, Saflufenacil, and Florpyrauxifen-Benzyl), and 5 levels of rain-free time after application as the subplots (0.5 hours, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, and without rain (12 hours)).

Results

The results of this study showed that rain-free time after application had a significant effect on the effectiveness of herbicide. Glyphosate herbicide applied with rainfall for 4 hours produced weed damage up to 91.66%. Ammonium Glufosinate also showed high effectiveness with a damage level of 86.33%. Meanwhile, Topramezone herbicides, Florpyrauxifen-Benzyl, and Saflufenacil produced weed damage by 46%, 33.77%, and 0%, respectively.

Discussion

The results of this study highlight the importance of choosing the right herbicide and optimal application time for effective weed control in oil palm plantations. Glyphosate and Ammonium Glufosinate were found to be the most effective herbicides, with high levels of weed damage. The selection of herbicide types and appropriate application time is crucial to increasing the effectiveness of weed control and maximizing oil palm yields.
