Introduction

Soil is a vital component of the ecosystem, playing a crucial role in supporting plant growth, filtering water, and storing carbon. Inceptisol soils, in particular, are a type of soil that is characterized by its young age and imperfect development. These soils are often found in areas with high rainfall and rapid weathering processes. In this study, we aim to analyze the clay minerals present in inceptisol soils in Onan Runggu District, Samosir Regency, and understand the development of these soils based on the toposhene.

Background

Inceptisol soils are a type of soil that is characterized by its young age and imperfect development. These soils are often found in areas with high rainfall and rapid weathering processes. The toposhene, a type of soil profile, is a key factor in determining the development of inceptisol soils. The toposhene is a complex system that involves the interaction of various soil components, including clay minerals, organic matter, and water.

Methodology

This study was conducted from March to June 2018, using a descriptive approach and survey method. Three soil profiles were chosen as representations, which were observed at an altitude of 912, 1112, and 1222 meters above sea level (MDPL). Soil samples were taken from each horizon to be analyzed for soil texture and clay minerals using differential thermal analysis methods (DTA).

Results

The results of field observations and laboratory analysis revealed that profile I shows that the soil inceptisol in the area has a level of initial soil development and the dominance of clay minerals in the form of allophane. Meanwhile, profiles II and III describe the soil with a more immature level of development, where a combination of allophane and kaolinite minerals is found.

Deeper Analysis of Clay Minerals

Clay minerals, such as Allophane and Kaolinite, have an important role in determining the physical and chemical properties of the soil. Allophane, which is an amorphous clay mineral, is usually found in young soils with imperfect development. This characteristic makes the soil with Allophane has the ability to hold water and better nutrition, although under certain conditions can experience rapid weathering if not managed properly.

Conversely, kaolinite, which is a more stable clay mineral, is usually found in more mature soils. The existence of kaolinite in profile II and III shows a further weathering process, where more complex minerals have been formed through long-term interactions between origin minerals and the environment. Kaolinite has a lower water absorption than Allophane, but it plays a very role in stability and nutritional retention.

Understanding of clay minerals in this inceptisol soil is very important for land management, especially in areas that depend on agriculture. By knowing the dominating types of clay minerals, farmers and land managers can make better decisions related to plant selection, use of fertilizers, and appropriate soil treatment practices to increase soil fertility and agricultural productivity.

Therefore, this research provides valuable insights not only in scientific aspects, but also in practical applications to support sustainable agriculture in Onan Runggu District and surrounding areas. With a better understanding of land characteristics, land management can be done more efficiently, thereby increasing the welfare of the community and environmental sustainability.

Conclusion

Overall, this study shows that although inceptisol soils in this area have good potential for agriculture, special attention is needed for the management of clay minerals so that the benefits can be maximized on a sustainable manner. The results of this study can be used as a reference for further research on inceptisol soils and their management.
