Relationship between Midwife's Characteristics and Motivation with Performance in Providing Postpartum Services at Tgk Chik Hospital Ditiro Pidie Regency in 2015

Introduction

The quality of healthcare services provided by midwives plays a crucial role in determining the health outcomes of mothers and their newborns. In this context, the Tgk Chik Ditiro Regional Hospital in Pidie Regency, Indonesia, acts as a referral hospital that provides health services to the community. However, despite being one of the largest hospitals in the area, the level of patient satisfaction is still far from the minimum service standard target set, which is more than 80%. This highlights the need for evaluation and improvement of midwife's characteristics and motivation, as both have a significant influence on their performance in providing services.

Background

Adequate education and training for midwives are essential in determining the quality of the services they provide, especially in childbirth services. The performance of midwives in providing postpartum services is a critical aspect of healthcare, as it directly affects the health outcomes of mothers and their newborns. In this study, we aim to analyze the relationship between the characteristics and motivation of midwives with their performance in providing childbirth services.

Methodology

This study employed a survey with a cross-sectional approach, where 32 midwives who are assigned in the midwifery room of the Tgk Chik Ditiro Regional General Hospital were used as samples. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires, and data analysis was carried out using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis with double logistics regression.

Results

The results showed that the performance of midwives in providing puerperal services only reached 43.8%, which was relatively low. There is a significant relationship between work status (p = 0.049), training (p = 0.021), and external motivation (p = 0.032) to the performance of midwives. Among these factors, training has the greatest influence. The results of the multivariate analysis show that the training has an Exp β value of 10,995, followed by external motivation with an exp β 8,680 value, and work status with an exp β 8,495 value.

The findings of this study suggest that the performance of midwives in providing postpartum services is influenced by their characteristics and motivation. Effective training can improve the skills and knowledge of midwives, so they can provide better services and in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). In addition, management also needs to provide clear guidance and direction and appreciation for midwives who show good performance. The application of fair sanctions for those who violate also needs to be done in order to create a professional work environment.
