Pakpak Bharat Regency in North Sumatra, Indonesia, has been identified as a region with significant economic potential from the Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFP) sector, also known as Non-Timber Forest Products (HHBK). Research by Berutu Iwan Taruna has shown that HHBK is a crucial subsector in the agricultural sector of Pakpak Bharat Regency, contributing to the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). This study focuses on the role of three main HHBK commodities, namely Gambir, incense, and Patchouli, in the development of Pakpak Bharat Regency.

The Importance of Non-Wood Forest Products in Pakpak Bharat Regency

Pakpak Bharat Regency has a rich biodiversity, with nine recorded HHBK commodities, including incense, sweet skin, patchouli oil, candlenut, gambier, palm sugar, aren, rattan, and durian. These commodities have the potential to increase the income and welfare of the people in Pakpak Bharat, especially in the agricultural sector. The study highlights the importance of HHBK in the development of Pakpak Bharat Regency, with a focus on three main commodities: Gambir, incense, and Patchouli.

Analysis of Location Quotient (LQ)

The study uses the Location Quotient (LQ) analysis to identify the importance of each commodity in the economy of Pakpak Bharat Regency. The results show that:

Gambir (Uncaria Gambir Roxb) has the highest LQ value, which is 51.76, indicating that this commodity is very important for the economy of Pakpak Bharat. Gambir cultivation requires an average of 120 workers per hectare, produces 19,893 kg per hectare, and generates an average revenue of Rp21,518,086 per hectare for farmers.
Incense (Styrax Benzoin) has an LQ value of 1.81. Cultivation of incense requires an average of 61 workers per hectare, produces 150 kg per hectare, and generates an average revenue of Rp30,476,151 per hectare for farmers.
Patchouli (Patchouly Oil) has an LQ value of 1.93. Patchouli cultivation requires an average of 61 workers per hectare, produces 0.21 tons per hectare, and generates an average revenue of Rp77,830,000 per hectare for farmers.

Contribution of HHBK to the Economy of Pakpak Bharat Regency

The study shows that these three commodities overall absorb 189,225 workers, which is equivalent to 3.04% of the total productive age workers in Pakpak Bharat Regency. The contribution of HHBK to the agricultural sector GRDP reached 20.55%, and HHBK contributed 13.40% to the total GRDP of Pakpak Bharat Regency. This indicates the significant role of HHBK in supporting the regional economy.
