Introduction

Serdang Bedagai Regency, located in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is known for its eight beautiful beaches that attract thousands of tourists every year. The tourism industry has become a significant contributor to the regional economy, with beach tourism being a major driver of economic growth. This study aims to investigate the effect of beach tourism on Regional Original Revenue (PAD) in Pantai Cermin District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, for a five-year period from 2011 to 2015.

Background

Beach tourism has become a vital component of the tourism industry in Serdang Bedagai Regency. The region's natural beauty, including its beaches, forests, and wildlife, has made it an attractive destination for tourists. The tourism industry has created employment opportunities, generated income, and contributed to the regional economy. However, the impact of beach tourism on the regional economy is not well understood, and this study aims to fill this knowledge gap.

Methodology

This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach, utilizing secondary data from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports of Serdang Bedagai Regency and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of North Sumatra. The data includes information on the number of tourist visits, regional levies, and PAD for the period from 2011 to 2015. A panel data regression analysis method is used to determine the effect of the number of tourist visits and regional levies on PAD. The Random Effects Model (Rem) model is operated through e-views software to analyze the data.

Results

The results of the study show that the number of tourist visits has a positive and significant influence on PAD. This means that an increase in the number of tourist visits will lead to an increase in PAD. Similarly, regional levies also have a positive and significant impact on PAD at a significance level of 5% (0.05). This suggests that the management of regional levies is crucial in increasing PAD.

Discussion

The results of this study have significant implications for public policy. The local government should continue to develop the tourism sector by improving facilities and accessibility to existing beaches. A more aggressive promotional strategy, improving service quality, and sustainable tourism product development will be the key to attracting more tourists. In addition, the management of regional levies needs to be improved so that it is transparent and accountable, so as to increase public confidence in existing tourism programs.

Conclusion

This study provides a clear picture of the importance of coastal tourism in its contribution to the regional economy. By utilizing existing natural resources, Serdang Bedagai Regency can significantly improve its PAD, providing long-term benefits for local communities and regional economic sustainability. The results of this study have significant implications for public policy, and it is recommended that the local government continues to develop the tourism sector and improves the management of regional levies.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. The data used in this study is secondary data, which may not be accurate or reliable. Additionally, the study only focuses on the impact of beach tourism on PAD and does not consider other factors that may influence PAD.

Future Research Directions

This study provides a foundation for future research on the impact of beach tourism on the regional economy. Future studies can investigate the impact of beach tourism on other aspects of the regional economy, such as employment, income, and poverty reduction. Additionally, future studies can explore the impact of beach tourism on the environment and local communities.
