Introduction

Violence in courtship is a serious threat that can occur to one of the parties in dating relations. This action is usually carried out to get control, authority, and power over partners. This form of violence can vary, ranging from verbal or emotional violence, physical violence, to sexual violence. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. This study aims to describe and find the adaptability of students who experience violence in courtship, with a focus on those who live in boarding houses in Padang Bulan Village, Medan Baru District, Medan City.

Background

Violence in courtship is a complex issue that affects not only the individual but also their family and community. In Indonesia, the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) reported that in 2020, there were 1,444 cases of violence against women in the country. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of the adaptability of women who experience violence in courtship, particularly in the context of boarding students in Padang Bulan Village.

Methodology

This research is descriptive by involving three main informants, namely female students who have experienced violence in courtship. Data collection was carried out through literature studies, observation, and in-depth interviews. The data obtained are then analyzed qualitatively, so that the conclusions of the research results can be withdrawn.

Analysis of Adaptation Ability

The ability to adapt women who experience violence in courtship is very important to help them get out of dangerous situations. Awareness and emotional arrangement is the main foundation in the recovery process. Women who can recognize and manage their emotions tend to be more able to face difficult situations. Impulse control helps them in making wiser decisions, avoiding reactions that can worsen the situation. Furthermore, Realistic optimism plays an important role in building hope for a better future, even though at this time they are facing severe challenges.

Third, Empathy allows them to understand the feelings and experiences of others, which can strengthen social support from friends and family. Analysis of the cause of the problem is also very crucial, because by understanding what causes violence, they can find more effective solutions. Self-efficacy or belief in one's own ability is also an important factor. Students who believe in their ability to change the situation will be more encouraged to take positive steps. Finally, the ability to reach assistance emphasizes the importance of having support from outside, both from friends, family, or institutions that provide assistance for victims of violence.

Case Studies

This study involved three female students who have experienced violence in courtship. The first informant, Dewi, experienced physical violence from her partner. She was able to recognize her emotions and manage them effectively, which helped her to face the situation. Dewi also had impulse control, which helped her to make wiser decisions and avoid reactions that could worsen the situation.

The second informant, Siti, experienced emotional violence from her partner. She was able to understand the feelings and experiences of others, which strengthened her social support from friends and family. Siti also had realistic optimism, which helped her to build hope for a better future.

The third informant, Nur, experienced sexual violence from her partner. She was able to analyze the cause of the problem, which helped her to find more effective solutions. Nur also had self-efficacy, which encouraged her to take positive steps to change the situation.

Conclusion

In order to deal with violence in courtship, the ability to adapt female students in the boarding houses of Padang Bulan Village is very diverse. This study shows that resilience factors consisting of seven aspects - emotional awareness, impulse control, realistic optimism, empathy, cause analysis, self-efficacy, and the ability to reach assistance - vital roles in the adaptation process. Increasing awareness of the importance of these aspects can help women to be more prepared to face and recover from violence in courtship, so they can live a better and safer life.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increase awareness of the importance of resilience factors among women who experience violence in courtship.
Provide training and education on resilience factors to women who experience violence in courtship.
Establish support systems for women who experience violence in courtship, including friends, family, and institutions that provide assistance.
Encourage women to seek help when they experience violence in courtship.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. The sample size is small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. The study only involved female students, which may not be representative of all women who experience violence in courtship. The study only focused on boarding students in Padang Bulan Village, which may not be representative of all women who experience violence in courtship in other contexts.

Future research should aim to:
