Introduction

The Karst Lau Damak Land Unit, located in Bahorok District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, is a unique region with distinct land characteristics. This study aims to examine the characteristics and classification of land contained in this Karst Land Unit, with a focus on understanding the morphology and soil properties of the area. The research was conducted at the Research and Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, as well as at PT. Socfin Indonesia.

Methodology

The study involved analyzing three representative soil profiles, namely P1 (Karst Hilltop) at an altitude of 280 m above sea level, P2 (other karst hill) at an altitude of 217 m above sea level, and P3 (other karst hill) at an altitude of 124 m above sea level. The analysis included bulk density, texture, structure, consistency, soil color, H2O pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), cations that can be exchanged, CEC (cation exchange capacity), and basic saturation. The results were then classified based on the * Key Soil Taxonomy * 2014.

Results

The results showed that the upper part of the karst hill contains more rock fragments and the depth of solum which is shallow than the soil profile at a lower height. P1 has reddish black soil, yellowish red P2, and yellow P3. Chemically, the soil in this area has low properties, especially in H2O pH, cations that can exchange, basic, CEC, and SOC saturation. Soil consistency in the surface horizon of the three soil profiles tends to be loose, while the bulk density in P1 is lower than P2 and P3. The three soil profiles have a cambic horizon characteristic, so the classification according to Soil Taxonomy is Typic Dystrudepts.

Analysis of Karst Land Characteristics

Soil characteristics on karst land are strongly influenced by geographical and climate conditions. Steep karst hill and complex geological structure cause the soil formed has a significant variation. In Lau Damak, variations in land color show differences in mineralogy and level of soil maturity. The reddish black color in P1 can be indicated by the higher organic matter content, while the yellow color in P3 reflects lack of minerals and organic matter.

A more shallow depth of solum at the top of the hill shows greater erosion due to high rainfall and poor drainage characteristics in the area. Soil with low pH can indicate soil fertility problems that will have an impact on plant growth, especially for agricultural crops that require a more neutral soil pH.

Limitations and Future Research Directions

Weaknesses of low soil chemical properties in karst regions such as lau damak are often caused by slow weathering processes and not optimal water retention. Further research needs to be done to understand more in the relationship between the characteristics of this soil and local vegetation and the potential for its use in sustainable agriculture.
