Introduction

The diversity of insects in rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) is a crucial aspect of understanding the rice field ecosystem and managing pests effectively. Research conducted by Dian Mustika Putri in 2015 at the Tanjung Morawa Paddy Seed Center and Pest Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, provided valuable insights into the population and diversity of insects in rice plants during the vegetative and generative phases. This study aims to examine the existence of natural pests and enemies in rice plantations and to calculate the type of diversity index (H') to assess the level of insect diversity in both phases of rice growth.

Methodology

This study used yellow traps and broom nets to catch insects in rice plants. The results show that in the vegetative phase, there are 8 orders of insects with 31 families and a total population of 381 individuals. The Order Coleoptera (Coccinelidae) dominates with the number of 27 individuals (7.09% of the total population), while the Order Coleoptera (Tenebrionidae) has the lowest amount with 1.31%. In the generative phase, found 8 orders of insects with 31 families and a total population of 1040 individuals. The Order Coleoptera (Carabidae) is the most with the number of 145 individuals (13.94% of the total population), while the Coleoptera (Tenebrionidae) order again shows the lowest number with 13 individuals (1.25%).

Analysis of Diversity Type

This study also calculated the type of diversity index (H') to assess the level of insect diversity in both phases of rice growth. The type of diversity index in the vegetative phase is 2,733343, which shows moderate diversity. Meanwhile, the type of diversity index in the generative phase reached 3,16155, indicating a higher and stable diversity of species.

This study provides important information about the population and diversity of insects in rice plants. These findings can be used for:

Identification of the order and family of insects that dominate in each phase of rice growth can help identify the main pest that needs to be watched out for.
